There are film festivals, and then there is Venice.
As the world’s oldest film festival—established in 1932—La Biennale di Venezia is not just an event; it’s a cinematic institution. Its red carpet has hosted the most iconic names in film history, and its Golden Lion has come to symbolize not just artistic excellence, but the future trajectory of global cinema.
And yet, for us in Türkiye, Venice is more than just a festival—it is a stage where cinema meets diplomacy, art meets industry, and storytelling meets legacy.
🏛️ A Platform Where Cinema Becomes Cultural Power
The Venice Film Festival doesn’t chase trends. It defines them.
Every year, the festival introduces the world to films that will dominate conversations—from Oscar winners to hidden gems. But what makes Venice so distinct is its ability to merge aesthetic prestige with institutional impact. This is a space where cinema isn’t just screened—it’s shaped, debated, and remembered.
As the Turkish Film Commission, we view festivals not only as exhibition spaces, but as strategic opportunities for visibility, co-production, and cultural presence.
🌍 Türkiye at Venice: Close, But Not Yet Prominent
Geographically, Italy and Türkiye are neighbors. Culturally, we share deep roots. Yet, our cinematic presence at Venice has been intermittent.
It’s time to change that.
We have the talent, the stories, and the locations. What we now need is sustained presence—projects that compete, collaborations that grow, and professionals who are not only attending, but influencing the conversation.
Venice offers this stage—if we claim it.
🎥 What Venice Offers to Turkish Creatives
- Prestige: Simply screening a film at Venice carries immense international weight.
- Networking: The industry programs, market events, and country delegations open doors to European and global partnerships.
- Storytelling at Scale: Venice celebrates bold, socially conscious, and visually daring cinema—an ideal match for many Turkish projects.
For producers, directors, and screenwriters from Türkiye, Venice is not just a dream—it’s a powerful strategy.
🧭 A Personal Reflection
I’ve witnessed firsthand how certain festivals leave an imprint—not just on careers, but on entire national industries. Venice is one of those festivals. It’s not about glamour for the sake of it. It’s about legacy. And for countries like ours, which hold centuries of stories yet to be told on the global screen, legacy matters.
As we look toward 2025 and beyond, I believe Turkish creatives must approach Venice with more than hope. With intent.
